Cultural Activities
The town squares, ancient ampitheaters, Roman cloisters,
and medieval castles of Provence provide the perfect backdrop
to summer music and dance festivals. There are many annual
events held throughout the region in cities, towns and villages,
and many of France's major summer music festivals are held
in Provence.
Vaison's Roman ampitheater is the site of the July
International Festival of Dance and hosts the "Blues
and Jazz in Vaison" in August.
Avignon also holds an annual summer Theater
and Dance Festival in July. Orange holds summer festivals
in its Roman ampitheater (see
schedule)
During the first week-end of August, Châteauneuf-du-Pape,
the former summer residence of the 14th century Avignon popes,
celebrates "La Fête de la Veraison" (when the grapevine
flowers turn into fruit.)
Many of the nearby villages (E.g. Cairanne, Sablet, Seguret,
Rasteau) host many other smaller festivals throughout the
year.
